In 2023, the number of people who don’t utilize some type of streaming platform is almost non-existent. Whether it’s Netflix, Disney or ESPN Plus, Amazon Prime, GBT’s StreamIT TV, or the hundreds of other streaming options, there’s a good chance you tune into at least one of these on your TV or mobile device. A good reminder of this is when the NFL season kicks off their Thursday night football games; if you want to see the live game, you will need to subscribe to and tune into your Amazon Prime account to watch. That’s right, just like last year, Amazon Prime has paid the NFL approximately a billion dollars per year for the rights to broadcast this one game per week!
We understand how frustrating things like this can be and how unfortunate it is that you must have this subscription or that subscription to watch the programming you want to watch, but if you take a step back and look at what else streaming has made available to us, it is quite remarkable! For many of you that played high school, middle school, or little league sports, wouldn’t it be amazing if you had footage of those games? Just 10 years ago, video footage of these types of events was hard to come by, and typically the quality wasn’t very good. Today, however, because of the push by large companies to switch to streaming which has sped up the advancement of that technology, it is common for me to be able to watch a little league, middle school, or high school event I can’t make it to in person. The fact that I can sit in my living room and watch a live game of my high school team playing is a complicated process that many of us take for granted–when 10 years ago we were lucky if there was a video someone had recorded that we could go back and watch!
With anything that changes, there are always advantages and disadvantages, but the fact that we can now watch our sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren when we can’t be there in person makes us so fortunate, and most of this would not be available without the advancement of the Streaming initiative.
